Cloud hosting is one of the latest technologies in the field of computing. The technique entails sharing the resources of a powerful computer with other less powerful computers. The less powerful computers interact with the powerful server in client-server architecture. However, this type of interaction is not ordinary client-server architecture because the clients do not interact directly with the server. Instead, they interact via an intermediary server which is known as a virtual server or a cloud server. Each client has their own virtual server that is not shared with another client. In other words, the resources of a particular cloud server are exclusive to a particular client.
Since servers are very expensive, it is important that one server is partitioned into special partitions that facilitate the creation of virtual servers whereby each interacts directly with a particular client. These virtual servers appear to the clients as if they are real dedicated servers although in reality they are not physical servers. Each cloud server can have its own operating system and its own login mechanisms. Apart from the operating system, each cloud server is allocated a certain amount of hard disk space, CPU time and the primary memory which is commonly referred to as the RAM. These resources are acquired from the powerful, physical server. This set up is what experts call a virtual environment.
To make the cloud hosting technique possible, some special software is used. This software is called hyper visor. The software enables the dynamic and transparent allocation of the resources of the physical server to the virtual servers. This in turn helps the physical server to serve different clients with different operating systems concurrently.
The Operation of Cloud Hosting
Clients submit their requests to their virtual servers. These requests may be submitted at exactly the same time by more than one client. A single client request usually consists of numerous processes to be executed by the server. The virtual servers have their own scheduling algorithms by which they schedule the processes. The relevant virtual servers execute these processes in the order in which they are scheduled. The results or feedback is then sent back to the client that had made the request. This is how all the virtual servers work. The reason why the virtual servers are regarded as virtual and intermediary is that they do not have their own hardware resources and the tasks executed on them are actually executed on the real physical server. The hyper visor software, which is the key software in this set up, facilitates the flow of clients’ requests from the virtual servers to the physical servers in a carefully ordered style. The software ensures that the clients’ requests do not conflict each other.
Advantages
Cloud hosting has enabled many more people to host their websites inexpensively. Most of these people would not have afforded to host their sites due to the high cost of dedicated servers. Another advantage is that cloud computing offers improved network security. These are advantages are important.
